10 best things I heard all year... no particular order, year of release or genre... I don't micro manage music... sorry. Kingdom Come - Journey LP - Oh hell... this is great. Arthur Brown (the infamous "God of Hellfire") churns out a brilliant album with beats done by a vintage bento box. Time Captives is one of the greatest things I've heard in damn near a decade. Pat Benatar - Love Is A Battlefield 12" - I'd been looking for this track for a long ass time... the whole structure is very reminiscent of drum'n'bass. Who knew that I'd stumble across a vintage 12" with a 7+ minute remix by Jellybean... or that it would ride so well with dark drum'n'bass... sample the wonderfulness here... http://fishead.gabber.org/audio/ - (hint, it's love is a jungle battlefield) Pig Destroyer - Terrifyer 2LP - Either you get it or you don't... most people are in the don't category. Shit, though... it's extreme metal and it samples Popol Vuh (among others!) Venetian Snares - Huge Chrome Cylinder Box cd - Snares absolutely pegs it with a moodier album that takes his stream of consciousness beats to a new level. Not much else needs to be said. Golden Earring - Twilight Zone 12" - One of the best basslines of all time. 7 minute 12" remix... up until the Outside Agency boys came along this was the best record to come out of Holland... ever. various - Reduced Phat 2% - it's not a compilation, it's a menage a trois split cd... that's stacked with talent that people should be taking more notice of... Enduser is already on the move to Berlin... Why don't people in North America support local talent while it's still local? Find it and buy it. It's really fuckin' good. Shitmat - the English Breakfest series 1-5 12" - These little bitches are so much fun that it's ridiculous... I can't tell what's got more wit... the songs or the song titles. The beats feel like punches and the samples hit like punchlines. What more could you want... except for something serious... in which case you need less starch in your shirt. Tim Hecker - Mirages cd - Alien8 is blowin' up all over the place with Unicorns and Les Georges Leningrads and it's nice to see... but this one... oh man... this is fuckin' great. It's noisy without being piercing. Wire - on the box 1979 cd/dvd - Seriously brilliant shit. The 15th is a class piece of song writing... and a live version of Map Ref 41N 93W is fantastic to hear. I mean, shit... I was stoked as a motherfucker when I found a mint copy of 154 on vinyl... but hearing the desperation of a live version, and being able to watch it to boot... that seems like far too much to ask, but apparently it isn't. 100% essential. various - Shockout 1-10 - a serious of nine 12" singles, followed by a sweet ass compilation (which boasts an exclusive mix of Ghislain Poirier's L'Art de Fellation)... It's hard to pick just one record, so how about the whole collection. Hope y'all were awake when they came out, 'cause half of 'em are apparently out of print already. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
