nice post! interesting perspectives...I have noticed that a lot of people who like synth music are anti-social, etc..I'm a little on the anti-social side myself, but have always loved sports(just don't have the typical sports mentality that a lot of guys do) and played sports since the age of 7 years old. I also really enjoy reading about space and astronomy, maybe this is also a reason why I like spacey synth types of music. I like the fact that I'm "different" than most and enjoy unusual music. Sometimes people hear some of my stuff(who know NOTHING about synth based music) and are really surprised how good it sounds. I got into synth music from Electro funk(Hashim, Twilight 22, freestyle, Jonzun crew, Newcleus, etc) back in the mid 80s, from there I started exploring techno, etc, etc..... ----- Original Message ----- From: "John/Slackonomics" <slack@slackonomics.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Wednesday, December 22, 2004 2:30 AM Subject: [idm] Sports and electronic music - Was: "Squarepusher is Hot!" I've listened to electronic music since the early 80s (think Depeche Mode/Art of Noise) before migrating to (post)industrial (late 80s - Front 242, Nitzer Ebb, Ministry, nine inch nails, Skinny Puppy) and industrial (SPK, Cabaret Voltaire, Einstürzende Neubauten, Coil, Throbbing Gristle) and on to IDM/ambient (isolationism)/noise in the mid 90s (Aphex Twin, Speedy J, Illusion of Safety, Lustmord, Merzbow, Brighter Death Now, etc.) and I've always loved some sports, football, namely. I played football and some other sports and have always been fairly active, but I also played Dungeons and Dragons and was really into computers and synthesizers from an early age (I lusted after an Ensoniq Mirage in the 80s but had to settle for some cheap Roland piano-emulator while playing Ultima IV on my C64 and later on my Amiga; thankfully now I own a Yamaha VL1, Yamaha FS1R, Crumar DS-2, Kawai K5000S, Korg Oasys and Waldord XTk to assuage the lust I had for the Mirage way back when). It's true that electronic music fans are generally not sport enthusiasts, but it's not always the case. It seems like most "underground" musicians and their fans come from a certain antisocial, antiestablishment mindset, wherein these fans and musicians have bitter memories of being beaten up by jocks in high school, thus (perhaps) eschew sports later in life. Or perhaps I'm generalizing. :) -- Mr. Tangent [the binary police] www.mrtangent.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
