I think its because most mailing lists are dead.
This is purely theory, but i think people who are new
to the internet don't sign up to discussion email lists as
much or nearly at all because there are so many other
avenues to gain information or communicate -
chat, message boards, livejournal/blogs, slsk etc.
I kind of like email lists, but i can see whats attractive
about the other things too.
