Well, probably not. BUT - the recent re-recording/remixing of the first
(previously unreleased) Residents LP (WB RMX) is really lots of fun.
Do I think that most of what they have done since, um, "The King and I" is
pretty lame? Yes indeed. I say that as a staunch fan and collector of their
material since the old "Santa Dog" 7" and "Meet the Residents" era stuff
.This one, however, is really, really good.
It's a really nice update to the first, unreleased LP (which WB rejected).
It doesn't have that rough charm or as much flat out weirdness that the
early stuff like Fingerprince or Duck Stab has (which makes it wonderful),
but it also doesn't have the dumbed-down "shadow of their former selves"
feeling that most of the more recent output manifests. The remixing *does*
give this one a very modern, cogent "song" feel, but it has enough of the
old creativeness mixed with the 21st century production to make it an
unique and worthy (finally) addition to their catalogue. It's really an odd
record; very polished, but still cool. It feels like *they* didn't do the
remixing (which is most likely a complete overhaul/re-recording), but they
probably did. Some of the arrangements they whip up which are juxtaposed
against and layered on top of their playful cacophonies are just stellar.
Or maybe it's just what I needed to hear at the moment. You decide. Dunno
how it will hit someone who hasn't been an old school fan.
