the review that Blake posted pretty much said it all. i only disagree with
that review about the last half of the show where he was playing bass. i
guess it helped because i had a clear view of him playing from the right
bass bin. his gear hid him from most of the crowd looking at him straight
on. every note on the bass came through perfectly, but it may not have
seemed quite so because he would put some synth effects on it for certain
parts when he was jamming out.
none of these bass songs were very recognizable, and they were a joy to
hear. tom is just as much a virtuoso on the 4 and 6 string bass than with
any of his electronic music.
his gear consisted of 2 laptops, a Korg MS-10 or MS-20 (not sure which), a
4 string bass and a 6 string bass, and 2 12 space racks of effects and
mixers. i think there were also a couple standalone midi controllers
also. he stands behind them to do his thing, so you can't really see him
unless you're on the side of the stage.
he ended the set with a song from Big Loada (i think). i don't keep track
of song names from these idm types so i'm not sure which.
kenny the human orchestra was a fucking treat to see. he told us after the
show he will be doing an improv jam with squarepusher at the chicago
show. don't miss it if you have any control over what you do on friday!
a couple pics of tom and kenny are here:
