I'm not so sure about napster, but definitely things like Soulseek help the
smaller labels. I think that's mostly due to the emphasis on
discussion. People don't really care where they get their mp3s, I think,
and if you can get samples from a label's website I think some people even
prefer that to simply ripping off the entire album (as a means of listening
to it before buying or to judge whether to buy).
I mean, I know for a fact that resources like this list has led me to a lot
of music and still does when I'm feeling adventurous. That's not
necessarily because I can download it for free, but rather because I can
talk to people who feel the same way. Communities like this are far easier
to find and join compared to v. large and specific groups, in my opinion.
