quoted 1 line IS IDM AN EXPERIMENTAL GENRE, OR JUST ANOTHER GENRE OF POPULAR MUSIC?> IS IDM AN EXPERIMENTAL GENRE, OR JUST ANOTHER GENRE OF POPULAR MUSIC?
This is partially true, although the group of people for which this music is interesting is very small - and as popular by definition means "for many people or a large portion of the population", it's an interesting twilight zone - it attracts small numbers of listeners but its roots definitely lie in pop music - Funk, Soul, Jazz and the electronic styles that grew out of them (HipHop and House, for instance). Same with jazz today - when I play guitar with jazz groups, for example, few people turn up but they're well into the music. I imagine it's the same with IDM. Good to get all these opinions/input from all of you!
