mark,
the statement about IDM being for the discriminating listener is
certainly true and probably the bottom line, but I still hope many more
replies and opinions will be coming in.
As I said, when I listened to Mira Calix it was just too much and I
decided to get Savath&Savalas instead - I see quite clearly how seldom
I listen to Autechre recordings despite the fact that they inspire me
tremendously.
And the reference to coltrane is a very fitting one! He too isn't easy
to listen to (especially the one-hour versions of Favorite Things
towards the end of his life - I never sat through one of those more
than once). Still, Transition is up there as one of my favorite albums
ever,
I'm finding, more and more often, that it's more about reduction more
than virtuosity - If one wanted to be awkward, one could accuse Aphex
and Squarepusher of beatwanking - and it is a justifyable point, even
if I don't necessarily share it. But in some tunes, the sheer
musiciality is sometimes amiss.

I do that live stuff to but I'm based in Munich - unfortunately! I play
live quite often too though the electronic side is taken care of by
somebody else then, as I play guitar. I did play with my laptop and
guitar but that was too many duties at once!
In case there's anybody on this list from Berlin, I'll be playing there
on March 7 at Rosi's. Email me if you need further details.
