I use reason for beats in synch cubase for recording waves. I also get
"thick" beats by using the effects found in reason. try putting the
distortion, reverb and delay effects on a beat. play around with that.
the only thing I should mention about reason is, if you use the pre-designed
beats, you will limit yourself. people will recognize that you used reason
and it will sound less professional to other reason users. I recommend
making up your own original beats to impress the hardcore reason users.

To use Reason effectively, you need to use lots of compressors and EQ to
give your sounds the dimensions they need. I think you're right that there's
a certain flatness to things you do with Reason using the most
straightforward
techniques. But hey, if you're still starting out, you really don't have
the background in production to get it to sit up and bark.
It wouldn't hurt to spend a few afternoons at a good library reading
Electronic Musician, EQ, Tape Op, and Keyboard, for some good tutorials on
sound and mixing. I wouldn't give up on Reason until you are really on top
of how it works.
