Y'all (anyone interested in "best" formats & quality levels) should go
check out hydrogenaudio.org - "THE" place to go for audio codec info.
Last time I checked, the consensus was that the best thing was still
to encode with lame, using the "--alt-preset standard" option, or if
you want, "--alt-preset extreme" (or some such...)
From what I've heard right here on the list, Bleep.com encodes with
lame at the "standard" preset, so they're using the "best" codec and
quality level for pretty much any music.
However, I'm "lazy" and not an audiophile, so I just use let iTunes do
my work for me at its standard settings. Sounds fine to me, and my
files are smaller - spread out over thousands of files, I'm saving a
few gigs of space, and if I ever get an iPod-type device, I'll be able
to fit more music on it. Not that I'm arguing others should do this,
I'm just saying what I do because I feel like it. :P
