i thought i'd chime in with some recommendations of CD's i didn't know i'd ever like. the reason is that both CDs seem to be influenced by house, which is not a genre i have any interest in. however, like jungle or breakbeat, i found that it has been an influence on some artists who've taken it in an unexpected direction to the point where it's no longer what it was. the first CD is 'ion' by theorem. i bought this at a place formerly called "house of trance" in the east village of nyc, and my friend and i were looking for anything dark. 3 years later, this is the only CD that has survived that passing interest in dark trance. the cover attracted me right away, reminiscent of new order and joy division with its clean, minimal design, muted colors, and short, enigmatic track titles. this is closer to what i imagine is deep house, at least it sounds deep to me. solid 4/4 electronic kick drums thudding away, with ultra-minimal 303-ish basslines, and intermittent muddy synth stabs with tons of reverb on them. that's pretty much it, though other little hi-hat interludes and synth countermelodies pop in and out. quite mellow, good to chill out to without falling asleep, or any other low-light activities. the other CD is 'primordia' by deadbeat. i picked this up based on a review in grooves magazine and was not disappointed. start with the above description, but remove the extra hi-hat and synth moments and replace them with a backdrop of shifting, murky textures. pull a thin veil of mosquito netting over the sound and the result is like sitting in a swamp listening to some kind of house party coming from under the water. excellent. d. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
