I love VSnares, and that whole category of hardcore
IDM/breakcore/whatever you want to call it. I don't know if I'd still
be considered young and carefree (I'm 25) but I kind of figure that I
won't stop liking this stuff as I age. My roommate is 38, and
(fortunately!) also loves that kind of stuff. I have friends who like
it, others who can't stand it, so the music I play when I have people
over will depend on who they are and how much I feel like annoying them.
I really think that this is a burgeoning scene right now...that a lot
of people around my age who were into and subsequently got tired of
90s-style hardcore techno, who were introduced to IDM through Richard
D. James Album and its ilk, who have Reason and a CD burner, now are
starting to produce music in this vein. Kind of the "post-rave" music
for those of us who don't feel like mellowing out and listening to
house music or minimal techno. Not that I have anything against house
or minimal techno, but I think I'll always have more of an appreciation
for breakbeat mashups and the kind of dark humor that these guys
incorporate into their sound.
(BTW, I just subbed to this list. Hi. I'm Tim, I live just outside of
Washington, DC. Sometimes I DJ hard techno/acid/hard house as "Tim
Resistor". That might sound weird since I was just talking about how
much I love breakbeats, but it all makes sense to me.)
