Yeah, they were around. not nearly as big as they are now, granted, but
they started out in the mid/late 80's. Like many consumer electronic
stores, they didn't really explode until the computer thing hit in the
mid-late 90's.
But that may also have been that I was living in Minnesota in '94, where
they started out and had been for years. They just opened up a huge new
HQ there -- I hear it's gigantic and gaudy as hell, from an architectural
standpoint
