i have to agree here. there's actually some kind of lawsuit and
settlement about the artificially overpriced nature of major label
CD's. people can make a claim and get back some piddling
refund if you've bought a major label CD from a retail store in the
past several years (don't recall all the details, i know it's online
somewhere).
to me this is useless. if there was an industry-wide price drop on
CD's (to something more like $10-12 per CD) and less money
spent on marketing empty, image-driven music seemingly made
by spoiled rich stars, people might be more inclined to spend their
hard-earned money on legitimate releases. give the people a
reason to care about the music.
in support of this, i've actually heard that indie label sales have
been increasing while the majors have been flat or declining (just
hearsay, sorry - wish i had something to back it up). then again it's
a different audience with a different mindset. i overheard an older
coworker excalim "i'm getting an ipod this weekend...i'm never
going to buy CDs again!" but i doubt he'll be trying to download the
latest autechre tracks.
i know this is probably preaching to the choir, but...there it is.
