*I. GHOSTLY NEWS
Were going to flip it a minute and use this space to give you an artist
update. Your peek into the summer lives of some Ghostly artists.
Dabrye-
Tadd makes two appearances on some fabulous new releases, both Berlin-related.
One is a new track, Fascinated, recorded under his birth name on Pole's
~Scape label compilation, staedtizism 4 (also featuring Daniel Bell, Akufen,
Deadbeat, Safety Scissors, etc.). The other is a deadly remix as Dabrye on T.
Raumschmires debut Novamute single, MONSTERTRUCKDRIVER. Dabryes Big Truck
Remix is his heaviest beat yet.
Tadd Mullinix will be touring as Dabrye with the Leaf labels resident genius,
Manitoba, on the West Coast this September (see dates below). Currently, Tadd
is residing in Berlin, working on Two/Three and preparing for the State of The
Union tour, which begins tomorrow (see those dates below also).
Dykehouse-
Mike Dykehouse is putting the finishing touches on his yet to be named album.
The psych-grunge-shoegazer epic will be released in early 2004, but you can
expect the debut single Chain Smoking sooner. His breakout cover debut on
Idol Tryouts has been receiving tons of love, heightening the anticipation for
his self-penned material.
Dykehouse will be performing with his other label boss, IDM-pioneer, Mu-Ziq,
in Chicago at the Empty Bottle on July 19th. While his karaoke career has
gone a bit quiet recently due to his work in his bedroom studio, Mike has been
seen around town sporting his trademark 70s headphones and a flower in his
back pocket.
Kill Memory Crash:
The evilest of the bunch just came off two great shows with the Idol Tryouts
release parties in NYC and their hometown Chicago. Their debut mini-LP, When
the Blood Turns Black comes out this coming Tuesday. Best described as a
cross between Industrial and IDM with an Electro attitude, their debut is a
brittle, banging introduction to two gents who leave it all on the floor every
time.
Adam is spending the month in Rome, indulging in his Italophile urges while
Alex is holding it down in Chicago working on music and design. Expect more
shows this fall and perhaps a new 12 in the future.
Matthew Dear:
Matthew has been playing out a lot, last week he tore up Blackbx and Ghostlys
weekly Untitled party in Detroit, with his debut single Dog Days from his
forthcoming album this fall. This summer, Matthew also rocked Movement
(formerly the Detroit Electronic Music Festival) and Montreals MUTEK festival
with Richie Hawtin and Magda.
Matthews two new EPs, EP1(SPC-6) and EP2(SPC-7), are now available (MP3s are
posted at the site) and are getting love from DJs like Sven Vath and Josh
Wink. The Wire has called them some of the best Techno records of the year
with XLR8R adding, ten tracks for the whispered end of history. Matthew
just released his debut CD on Plus 8 as False to big praise, namely 4 stars in
URB. His Girlfriend EP under his alias Jabberjaw for Perlon reached number
16 on Germanys Groove magazine chart.
Midwest Product-
Ben, Chad and Drew are working this summer, after finishing their next
release, the aptly-titled, World Series of Love (GI-16). WSOL shows the
Product in a new light, as a true live band, capable of mesmerizing grooves,
heavy funk and pop precision. There is an MP3 of the new track Duckpond in
the coming soon section of the website to whet your appetite.
Midwest Product will be performing with one of our favorite bands, Broken
Social Scene at Ann Arbors Blind Pig on June 29th and at Michigans Cranbrook
Art Academy (
http://www.cranbrook.edu) this August and their full-scale US
fall tour will commence shortly therafter. Keep your browsers tuned to the
newly launched site (
http://www.midwestproduct.com), where you can get
exclusive downloads of live tracks and rarities from the band.
Osborne-
Todd has been busy as his and Tadd Mullinixs Rewind! Record label has been
steadily exploding. After being picked up to do the widely acclaimed Wired
For Sound mix CD for Tigerbeats New Zealand label, Violent Turd, Todds and
Tadds Soundmurderer and SK-1 project has been signed to Rephlex and the
debut, which compiles both old and new tracks, is imminent.
Osbornes new 12 for Spectral, Daylight (SPC-8), comes complete with an
Isolee remix and is released next Tuesday, July 15th. Though not even out yet,
the first pressing is already completely sold out. DJs like Detroit legend
Shake have been playing it and it's sure to be a summer staple at all
self-respecting parties.
TWINE-
Ghostly is proud to welcome Twine to the Ghostly family. After their
critically acclaimed releases on labels such as Frances Bip-Hop, Chicagos
Hefty Records and Swedens Komplott, The duo of Greg Malcolm and Chad
Mossholder come to Ghostly with their Self-Titled CD/LP this October. An eerie
and romantic album of immense sophistication and depth, this release is one of
the finest weve ever committed to plastic.

*III. GHOSTLY PRESS
-Idol Tryouts received an A- rating in both Spin and Entertainment Weekly.
Heres what the latter had to say:
...Tryouts is this year's [compilation] to beat, a set from the young
Michigan-based Ghostly International crew that comes with a grittier
techno-soul vibe, more Detroit than Cologne. Hip-hop impressionist Dabrye, a
cohort of like-minded beatmeister Prefuse 73, flips old-school synth stabs and
Gigantor hand claps into a mod R&B bubble bath; Kill Memory Crash build a
Teutonic-robotic Jonzun Crew; and Dykehouse's "Map Ref. 41 N 93 W" is a
prog-pop masterstroke that dares a sing-along chorus....
-A glowing Idol Tryouts reviews from Dusted Magazine:
http://www.dustedmagazine.com/reviews/839
-Review of Idol Tryouts in Issue #10 of Grooves: Who knew that Ann Arbor,
Michigan would be such a hotbed of new electronic music?
-There is a full-page feature on Ghostly in the June issue of Res magazine
(Radiohead on the cover).
-Ghostly is included in the list of Americas 20 Best Underground Labels in
the June 2003 issue of XLR8R.
