One thing to remember regarding this performance: it's definitely
atypical for TTA. They usually perform with 2 laptops, 2 guitars, bass
guitar (with James Hughes on bass duty), Rhodes piano, keyboard, and
sometimes a vocalist. The laptop+knob boxes set they did at Mutek isn't
how they usually rock it.
HOWEVER.
I still thought they were fantastic. Charlie from TTA told me before the
show that I'd be bored (because they weren't playing much new material,
maybe), but on the contrary, their performance was definitely one of the
highlights of the festival for me, for a couple reasons.
One, they simply played phenomenal tracks. No matter how they were
producing it, the actual music coming out of the speakers was excellent.
It included a bunch of material I'd never heard (and I have all the
releases plus have played with them on the same stage a number of
times), and tracks I was familiar with got a new treatment. The
symphonic track they played (evidently the only one that's going to be
on the new album) was just next-level; super good string parts that
alternately soared and were squashed down into millisecond granular
bits, then expanded back again to their original majesty. They obviously
had a good time on stage, and whether or not you think laptop jocks
should get down with their MIDI controllers "Hendrix style", it was fun
to watch.
As you can probably tell, I'm friends with those guys, and I say that
not to impress anyone that I'm "down", just to give full disclosure.
Having said that, though, I still rank 'em among the best of the new IDM
artists. Their sound is ultra-wide in terms of stereo field, and
ultra-deep in terms of frequency range. Their new album will be amazing,
I think.
