Good Lord!!!! My ears will be ringing for the next week. I was thoroughly impressed and inspired (for a change) by this show. All three acts added a completely different flavor that all melded together into a stew of hip hop/glitch heaven. This was the first time I had heard John Herndons "A Grape Dope" solo project. Very unique sound scapes collided with intensive live and looped rhythms that were all being trigger in real time. I like the sound so much I picked up the record. RDJ2, who I have also never scene, played a mind-bogglingly eclectic set of abstract hip hop, soul, funk, 80's and classic rock. The beauty of his set was how seemless the transitions were considering the musical diversity. I am a huge hip hop head and I have seen everyone from the Scratch Pickles to Kid Koala and I must say RDJ2 pull some shit that I doubt I'll every see again. Bravo!!!! Prefuse 73 was the only act I had caught before and I had high expectations from his last performance. Beginning with a wall of white noise Scott Herron, John Herndon and a DJ (whose name I didn't catch) soon launched into a barrage of heavily compressed beats, radio dial meandering and the signature cut up lyrics that have become synonomis with Prefuse's music. Although he didn't stay on stage long, John's drumming fused nicely into the mix of tight beats, panning noise, staccoto bass patterns and a Mini Moog tweeks (which Scott rarely took his hands off). Althought the DJ (anyone?) didn't seem to be adding a whole lot to the mix, I did notice the subtle textures and scratches coming in and out of transitions. Once the beats started hitting, they didn't let up and althought tempos changed (almost too much) there was an odd sort of continum that formed. All in all I thought this was a fantastically well rounded performance (equal parts: beauty, beats and glitch). If you haven't gotten a chance this tour or have heard other opinions about this performance I would recommend seeing it for yourself. I must say it was one of the best shows I've seen all year. (9 on a scale of 1-10) -Sean ^(|_|)^ _________________________________________________________________ Help STOP SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
