Neotropic should be easy proof of a female artist who can produce IDM and have original talent. Mira Calix does not. Sadly, and I intentionally didn't want to bring this up in my original post because of the 'female/male issue' (i just wanted to focus on the music), I actually believe Warp continues to keep her on BECAUSE she's female. If she was a guy, she would never have been signed. And as far as my "tutor" comment, that was true. Her first couple releases had tracks "co-produced" with Gescom. Pin Skeeling has some familiar Autechrish sounds as well. Connect the dots. So, sadly, she's cheated her way in so to speak. She never mailed a demo. She worked at Warp and liked some of the tunes, then became "friends" with Sean Booth, had some help with producing, and with their support was easily signed and writing an album. Take away the mastering and quality equipment and you have an artist who's a good 2 years away from getting signed. Shit she should only now be thinking about mailing demos. I just feel she's not exactly earned her way to where she is. Machine Drum, Nautilus, Fennesz, or even Ulrich Schnauss (to go the poppy route) could happily fit in with that 'Warp family' and help continue the label's tradition of quality releases. To me, her existence there taints their image. Maybe I'm too harsh, I don't know. at least i'm topical. -Mark M Mercer wrote:
