naturally, there's nothing wrong with experimentation and misuse of technology. especially in a digital environment where the equipment is virtual and there's almost no chance that you could actually damage any of your "equipment" by driving anything too hard. listen to track 5 on ae's EP7... i love the way the compression is misused on that track... in fact, listen to all of EP7 as i think it may well be a fairly common attribute of that release. makes things sound dirty and... claustrophobic?... i dunno. i love that sound, although i do think it can be overused. as far as calix' use of it in that track on the warp site... i think i'd have to hear it on cd or vinyl to be able to tell if it's (as was suggested before) some kind of accidental thing involved in getting it ready for the web, instead of a deliberate stylistic gesture... but i guess i'd be tempted to throw her the benefit of the doubt, and say that's it's most likely not just accidental 'bad' production. i think she knows what she's doing, even if it doesn't perhaps appeal to me at all times. at any rate, there's my two cents. -b. p.s.-anyone listened to that jetone "autumnmonia" release? there's a fellow who seems to have developed a uniquely (to my ear at any rate) 'compressed' sound to his percussion. sounds airless. in a good way. the ultramarin release on force seems to feature some of that similar sound... but not quite as prevalently... perhaps more 'tastefully'... and a live show i picked up sounds really neat and compressed too actually.. christ, what an unwieldy post script... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
