It wasn't Gen's place. The fire occurred at a studio owned by producer Rick
Rubins. At the time, Gen was visiting the studio - he had been invited
there by Love & Rockets, who were recording a new album. Gen was awarded 2
million dollars for his injuries. Here is a short article I found:

You may remember that Love & Rockets narrowly escaped from a fire three
years ago while recording an album at one of producer Rick Rubin's homes in
California. Also present the day of the fire was Genesis P. Orridge, the
founder and brain trust behind arty band Pyschic T.V.. P. Orridge was
injured quite badly when he was forced to jump from a second storey window.
He suffered a broken wrist, ribs and a shattered elbow in the fall, and was
recently awarded $2 million U.S. in damages that presumably Rubin's
insurance company will have to pay.
