The Grado line, the lower priced ones (under 200$) were very good sounding,
especially on the low end... but they give a heavy push to the bass,
wouldn't recommend for IDM listening, more for rock.
I've tried the Etymotic ER-4S and wasn't too impressed with them. Those are
extremely advanced earbud headphones which block outside sounds (REALLY
block outside sounds) and send the sound directly into your ear canal. One
of my friend raves about them, can get for around 250$ now, I'd compare some
hard demos before buying, at that point it will be personal preference, and
keep in mind for these to sound fabulous or any other very high end
headphones to sound a good step better than "normal" priced you NEED a
headphone amp. Try getting a cheap headphone amp and sticking it with some
of the headphones you have now, you should notice a pretty big difference on
the sounds you were missing.
Unless you're a real audiophile, I wouldn't recommend anything over around
400$, the amount of difference you are going to see just won't be that huge.
The others I liked, Sennheinser HD 580s, will give you everything you want
for IDM, going to pick up a pair of those myself soon. I've tried them in
comparison to the HD 600s (which cost 200$ more) and noticed a little
difference without using an amp, but definitly not 200$ worth. I'd spend the
extra to get a decent headphone amp and leave it at that. headphone.com is a
great recommendation to check for products, check ebay for a headphone amp,
and do just a little research to figure out which aren't total crap.
Oh, and if money truly isn't an object... go check out the Sennheiser
Orpheus... something like 12K$ for the system...
