of course you're right essentially, given the modernist conceit behind the music which values innovation, there's a staggering about of conformity. really it's like any other musical genre, people depend on conventions heavily. but here's the thought I always have: to expect non-conformity with a Genre is a contradiction. to define a genre is to pick out this this this and that sounds like it's all doing the same thing, and slap a label on it. so then what does it mean to then stand back and sniff, 'everyone's doing the same thing'? like, if you define 'idm' as ONLY the stuff that sounds like old autechre/BoC/aphex/etc (as some people apparently do) then you've defined things in a way that leaves out the torrent of other music going on that sprawls all over the place. i find that to be an area where electronica could go. in different ways, Moodymann, Theo Parrish, Ekkehard Ehlers and Thomas Brinkmann have all produced music that successfully blends concepts with sonically interesting music. those guys are all doing it more or less in an 'art' kind of way, but even Boards of Canada have a bunch of pop-like, amusing, conceptual concept in their work. so, i don't know, I think if you're inclined to express yourself that way, it hardly dooms you to coming off pretentious or ridiculous. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
