Define 'prime merzbow.' Merzbow has changed a lot over the years. I wouldn't call myself much of an expert (i don't know who is... his backcatalog has a lot more than 200 records in it), but I'd say it really depends what you want out of noise.

Seeing that you are on the IDM list, i would say buy scumtron (unless that's too obvious an answer). two tracks of blistering power noise which you can hear on an album of otherwise awesome (and much more accessible) stuff, thus not wasting your money (see below)... and the awesome stuff is pretty durn awesome - panasonic sound heavier than ever, autechre's track quite simply rules (too long though, but whatever), and russell haswell's track almost isn't there (or maybe that's rehberg and bauer's track... i forget.) of the ones you asked about, i would pick 'music for bondage performance (1 or 2)'. they're quite beautiful sometimes; prolly my most listened to merzbow records. Ambientish - just sounds, really. venerealogy is a dumb record and you will feel dumb if you buy it (i did). it's just loud and horrible (he released a lot (a whole lot) of records like this, in his 'power noise' phase in the 90s. approach with caution and a firm grip on your wallet). it does make a good weapon, however, being mastered many decibels louder than anything else i've ever owned, even high rise. tauromachine i have heard good things about (apparently it has rhythms?) but have not heard. 1930 is an interesting record..... heard it once, remember liking it a lot. i am a big fan of the earlier, 'junk music' style merzbow... just kind of banging on instruments, throwing concrete blocks around, etc. "deus irae" with null is good - there are a couple out there still available i think. your mileage may vary (intensely). my favorite akita thing by far is the cd he did under his own name, 'the prosperity of vice, the misfortune of virtue'. along the lines of music for bondage performance, but more varied, clearer sounds (lots of world sounds). unsettling, wonderful. too bad i don't own it and it's probably unavailable. actually i take that back... my favorite akita release is actually this record called grav - book of a thousand hands or something like that, with PGR and asmus tietchens. big slabs of sound, very still, reminds me of stone... i haven't heard it in years but i think i'll go listen to it right now... unfortunately i think it was already long out of print when i bought it from a cut out bin in high school, but if you see it around...

you used to be able to download this on fals.ch. i was underwhelmed. nothing kills noise deader than a laptop, even if you are as much of a maniac as russell haswell. ===== the humble abbott arthur purvis set his hand hereto __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
