A quick reminder about a show featuring David Toop & others that is taking place in Toronto this weekend... New Adventures in Sound Art with Inter/Access & feedback monitor present CREAM TEST CENTRIFUGE Saturday, November 16th, 2002 Annex Theatre, 736 Bathurst St., Toronto $15 in advance at 416.910.7231 - $20 the door Cream Test Centrifuge is a collaboration between renowned musician and writer DAVID TOOP (Rap Attack, Ocean of Sound, Exotica), Toronto-based electroacoustic composer SARAH PEEBLES, sound designer DARREN COPELAND, and Toronto guitarist and improvisor NILAN PERERA. David Toop will perform on flutes, steel pedal guitar, paraphernalia and effects, inserting surreal short stories, sarcastic social observation, historical oddities, and thoughts on the impact of digital music - all spatialized on the fly by Darren Copeland. Spatializing her own sonic constructions, Sarah Peebles will perform electroacoustics on laptop, drawing from CD playback glitches of Toop's music, Japan Rail commuting adventures, Tokyo video arcade and pachinko (electronic pinball) sound, hummingbirds, snow, fire and insects - augmented by acoustic shô performance (Japanese mouth organ) with real-time digital signal processing. Nilan Perera will utilize preparations of assorted paraphernalia such as swizzle sticks, paper clips, metal brushes and the like, as well as feedback and a variety of electronic effects. His explorations of sound, which infuse timbre, melodic gesture and cyclic contour with reminiscences of the blues, Hendrix, Partch, Sri Lankan folk and other musics, will also be spatialized by Darren Copeland. Cream Test Centrifuge is being presented as part of SOUNDplay, a series of electroacoustic music and experimental sound art events that put SOUND at centre stage in the context of visual images and words. David Toop's Canadian visit has been organized by Artcite Inc and has been sponsored by The VITA Project. VITA is a lecture/performance series in Windsor, Ontario focused on exploring contemporary art issues and is generously supported by its participating institutions and by The Canada Council for the Arts.
