My first time (short answer):
Squarepusher - Big Loda [US version]
My first time (long answer):
My friend from the floor below me in my college dorm
gave me the disc; I went up to my room, put it in my
headphones, laid down on the bed and pushed play. The
opening loop of Come On My Selector: "okay...nothing
new"; about five seconds into it "What the fuck?!"
Listened to it the entire way through without so much
as moving and as soon as it was finished I pushed play
again and ran it through. I listened to it three times
like that, which is rare. I often rewind interesting
parts of tracks, even if its only three seconds, to
really appreciate how something was put together.
[everyone I drive around with hates me for it] This
entire album was a giant "interesting part".
Now there seems to be a few questions: "what is idm?
IDM is relative...."
No! Perhaps it is, but this was absolutely the
turning point of my music life. A new era. Up until
then I knew Orbital; this wasn't Orbital. Damn, was
this not Orbital! Nin?? HA! Though his Nothing label
did put out some quality music here in the United
States.
From there, Aphex Twin [Would you believe I'd never
even heard of him?] from Aphex Twin -> Mu-Ziq ->
Bogdan Raczynski -> Rephlex/Planet-Mu in general ->
...the idm list, so not only can I learn but I can
also piss people off with these long, meaningless
stories.
ov. [climbs down off of his soapbox]
