i myself was never too much of a bauhaus fan although i was really into the
industrial (and semi-goth) sound for quite some time. i don't think the Cure
really ever topped "pornography" or "faith," 2 of the most miserable albums
in my record collection (although "disintegration" is indeed a great one).
As for industrial, I still find myself regularly going back to my noisy
records like early NON, throbbing gristle, spk, mid 80's laibach (nova
akropola especially), einstuerzende neubauten (who have aged especially
well, their new work is just as strong if not better), z'ev.... i still also
reference my skinny puppy records a lot and late 80s ministry/revco/etc,
242, a bit of FLA, and "that total age" by nitzer ebb which contains the
best umpteen reworkings of one single musical idea (bassline-drum
machine-yell yell yell) ever.
a lot of the electro-industrial stuff i was into when i was a teenager (zoth
ommog, kmfdm, etc) i can't really listen to much anymore, as it's hard to
take it seriously (or even consider that i took it seriously at one time)
but some of it is entertaining.
skinny puppy remains one of the best of the lot because they were truly
scary. dive did the same thing for me on his early records....
i think the "masonic" comp on hymen is a pretty good crossroads of the
noisier industrial aesthetic and more contemporary IDM-ish-ness.... i find
myself growing more interested in that area lately after a significant time
away from the industrial thing (at least in the way of new material).
