I pretty much stayed in Metro all night (didn't go down to Smartbar for the
other acts)... so I only saw part of the lineup. Jamie Lidell blew me away,
completely exceeded already high expectations with an awesome set of
beat-boxing, looped-delay vocal tracks and complete digital noise. I really
enjoyed his pseudo-digital-scratching he was doing on his looped
beats/vocals. He totally was into what he was doing and despite the thin
crowd (he started promptly at 10) it was probably my favorite portion of the
evening.
Chris Clark laid down a massive set of ultra-fast acid tracks, brutally
heavy stuff. It was a lot harder and more aggressive than anything on his
full-length and was closer to some of the newer Speedy J stuff (but
faster)... I was pleasantly surprised though. People seemed to really want
to get down although it was generally not that coherent for routine dance
moves...
DJ Ease's set wasn't especially to my liking. I'm not a huge Nightmares on
Wax fan and I ended up by the bar for most of his set talking to some
people, but the crowd seemed to be getting into it. Prefuse 73 was great,
although I found that his sound wore a bit thin on me as the night went on.
I love his records (under all his assorted aliases) so I was surprised to be
losing interest myself, so maybe it was just the time rolling by as the
night went on.
Richard Devine shook the foundations with some super heavy noise and
non-melodic Lipswitchness. He didn't do too much of the more abstract
Aleamapper stuff, mostly more rhythmic tracks. Occasionally he'd drop
something more structured like his Magic Bus comp track... I've seen him
perform before and this was not very different, but he's a master of what he
does so it was good to hear him doing it. If that makes sense.
LFO came on with a DJ set around 2 am and my sorry ass was tired, so I
caught a cab and went home. Luke Vibert was downstairs in Smart Bar and I
stopped in to check it out on my way out.... it seemed like a lot of people
were there specifically for his set, although i've never been a huge fan of
his stuff. So I called it a night and headed home.
It was an awesome show for $15. I was really glad that the tour stopped
through here... I feel bad for those in Toronto who missed out. Anyone who
has the opportunity to catch Mr. Lidell on tour any other time in the future
really should try to make it, as it was one of the best performances I've
seen in a long time. I was surprised that the venue wasn't very full. I
expected the show to sell out completely and it wasn't even close to
capacity, but it was a decent enough turnout, I suppose. All in all, a great
event....
