They're very different albums sonically and aesthetically, so it's not
really surprising. Amber is very similar to older-school IDM, like much of
the stuff on Warp at the time. B12, Nightmares on Wax, etc. I do think it
is a little myopic why anyone would think that the next autechre releases
would sound like anything they've done in the past -- the only reason to
pick them up, as a fan, is to see where they're going in the future.
And that's sort of a different approach to enjoying an artist. Lots of
times people follow an artist because the output has a consistent sound,
rather than a consistent techique or signature 'weirdness.' Plenty of
people buy an artist's or band's new album because they want more of the
same; they really like the sound they heard before. Sometimes it just
isn't the case, and Autechre are a case in point -- their stuff has
"evolved" on each album, taking bits from the previous and expanding on
those, rather than taking new bits and combining them with old consistently.
I'm not drawing a comparison to Autechre and The Beatles, but they have the
same camps -- people who like early Beatles don't tend to like older
Beatles, and vice versa. They're different styles and types of music. Of
course the albums in the middle tend to bridge the gap, but there aren't a
lot of fans who like everything.
I don't think it's very productive for either side, however, to claim that
an album is "crappy" or "miserable" without providing a reason (for others
to make an educated decision on their own). That's just trolling.
