Not really. "Amber" is my favourite Autechre album, yet "Confield" is my
second favourite and I really dig the stuff on "Gantz Graf". So, where do
I sit on your sliding scale between narrow- and open-mindedness?

Well, you're missing out a whole lot of other possibilities there. After
the likes of their "Artificial Intelligence" tracks, "Incunabula" and
"Anti", I was already hooked on their sound. "Amber" was a very
highly-anticipated Warp release. It was very much a case of 'the right
album at the right time'. Arriving in November 1994, its gloriously warm
cover (fluffy pink sand dunes), silver typography and more melodic,
spacious production values, contrasted nicely with the harsh English
winter of that year.
For me, "Amber" is just as important a part of Autechre's ever-evolving
style as the likes of "Confield" or "Chiastic Slide". "Tri Repetae" built
on "Amber" just as "Amber" built on "Incunabula". I can't really see what
all the fuss is about.

And suggesting that all people who enjoy "Amber" are narrow-minded *isn't*
a narrow-minded attitude?
My own personal theory for why "Amber" remains largely overlooked is that
most Autechre fans came on board when "Tri Repetae++" was released in the
States (just my own personal observation based on postings in this list
around that time). Those who enjoyed this went back to "Incunabula" and
found a much raw version of the Autechre sound they loved, but when they
tried out "Amber", it didn't quite seem to fit in with the others.
Then again, some people just don't like it -- but that's as valid a
reaction as liking it. And so what if someone who enjoys "Amber" doesn't
enjoy "Confield"? That doesn't in any way diminish their ability to enjoy
good music.

Jello - "Voile"
Yagya - "The Rhythm of Snow"
