"Is the lack of effects part of their aesthetic or a consequence of low budget?
Some may say Autechre's shows are more elegant by not throwing in superfluous
junk that confounds the music (which I can understand). Others may call them
lazy and/or cheap. My opinion is of the latter."
While some imagery can be nice to watch while listening to the likes of Plaid or Boards of Canada (the latest Plaid setup where they have a camera over the mixer is particularly cool), it is there to distract attention away from the fact that the artist(s) aren't doing much. Autechre instead pummel you not only with sheets of white noise, but also with darkness, strobes and smoke. Personally I prefer the Autechre approach. And I certainly don't think laziness or cheapness comes into it.
