Handbag techno or happy handbag, assuming they're the same thing, is (kind of) the progenitor of happy hardcore- little pink squishy cartoon melodies on top of 'banging' house/techno beats. Basically throwaway awfulness. I think it peaked in about 1995-6? IIRC, that's me trying to remember a really old issue of Mixmag, back when I didn't know any better and XLR8R wasn't on the racks at the local B&N. Please don't expect me to give artist references - uhh. I wouldn't admit to knowing if I did. (Disclaimer: I enjoy the Ural 13 Diktators 'Total Destruction' from time to time) Of course if you think about it too hard you might realize that a lot of IDM is little pink squishy cartoon melodies on top of 'glitchy' cubase overkill. But that's different.
