I think the answer is no different than from how one would relate any other mediums: You start with an aesthetic philosophy, which may or may not have sociopolitical aspects, then correlate to aspects of design/composition. For instance - the Futurist Movement. I'm too lazy to look up specific details for you, but there are plenty of resources on the net and in libraries. An art history course beginning at the industrial age should give you plenty to think about. That is the time in history when artists and thinkers began making such intellectual correlations.
