i was a sonar virgin; part of me wished the crowd stayed the size of the first day where you could actually spot people & get a tan. crowds cant be a low at a festival, so i guess i was pretty HIGH most of the time... getting there a day early & seeing lots of people i never saw again. but got to meet a few bods in the real world... like where did andy weatherall end up djing? 1st day was wicked, ran from cinematic orchestra to tuxedomoon. enjoyed mum & dad & a few other things in that tent... spent a while upstairs with the exhibitors & met mucho muchacho who'd been recording with dj vadim. gave us a couple of dope 12"s, plus this compilation of mainly us, & some spanish rappers called pachecho...krush was awesome, but a scenario with a couple of taxi drivers (& i speak spanish) put me off going back to sonar @ night... although the sound worked for krush because his set worked with the echoes as sound, the rest of that place was awful... they had the music @ the beach b4? move it back... best moment of all was being spotted in a record shop by the flipside crew who i dj'd with a year earlier & then being clocked by a college radio dj from new orleans... it outerwebbed me. caught some well inneresting stuff in the evenings of both days, but the best part for me was getting into the real world for a few days & diggin how many record shops were in barcelona if you got to em before they closed at 1pm! things outside of sonar were interesting as well.... the slew of record shops you could fall on if you managed to get out the door between 10am and 1pm. the pure arabic cd store & a few hidden gems i'm not telling anyone about unless you fancy a slew of dirt cheap 80's pop. there was an experimental music festival going on @ the joan miro musuem & the wrongfestival, on sunday professor angel dust called up & said "come round our restaurant and eat exotic flowers listening to exotic music". why not? most creative use of a warehouse space i'd seen all week: the chilled OVEN was way over in Poble Nou the music was wicked, the food the most amazing i've ever eaten anywhere... so many places to lounge for a drink, and then out came these amazing persian dancers from usbekistan... every sunday, angel dusts girlfriend is trying to bring some eclectica different kinda dance on the stage so that & the projected images makes a great wind down, although its open thurs thru sunday & during the week/ends they pull back the tables & dance. a lotta locals near the macba were complaining after sonar, was in a shop when someone came in with a petition to have the event moved from the hood. oh dear, guess we stopped a few people having siestas, then... woops!
