The Murcof Martes CD (Bay/Leaf)...very cool, quite different sounding -
crisscrosses the ambient/IDM boundaries effortlessly without sounding
derivative, trite or canned at any point. Kicks up some nice, dark
atmospheres using snatches of piano and what sounds like acoustic
instrumentation; these build - I hesitate to say "layer", as it's never
that thick, but usually almost minimal - into electronically punctuated,
yet organic sounding (at least some of the time) pieces. Nice melancholy,
dissonant feel. There's an occasional whirr and click (as well as fairly
strong rhythmic patterns throughout) which will intrigue the IDMer in the
family, along with a sound palette which might appeal to the ambient
listener and enough experimental ambition with which the pastiche is glued
to make this likely to be a crowd pleaser for many kinds of electronic
music aficionados. Makes for very nice rotation with the new Biosphere.
Right now it gets my vote for originality which leaps beyond novelty.
