I remember reading an interview with Moby around the time he wrote a big cheesy anthem called something like 'Every time you touch me'. He said in it that he had written the music specifically to appeal to a lot of people, so that he could get more attention and thus increase his platform to educate people on the issues that concern him. He also said that he felt uncomfortable doing that and didn't think he would do it again.
With that in mind, I'm not convinced 'Play' was written to cross-over, and I'd definitely agree with Greg that Moby has dabbled with many styles.. after the first rave album there was that one just called 'Ambient', then there was the really stylistically mixed 'Everything is Wrong', the hardcore (as in punk) one called something to do with animals..... why not rip off some riffs from good blues songs and release them uncredited to massive acclaim? :)
For that matter, why do I remember all this shit?!?! I've never liked Moby.. but I've always kept dibs on every release, even bothered to listen to each. Hmm...
