I use Tannoy Reveal Active monitors in my studio. Great response and
all-around presence, particularly in the mids. They're self-powered and
go for about $700 a pair.
Avoid Mackie's self-powered monitors. They're famous for having too
much presence in the lower-end....not like that's a bad thing (depending
on your tastes), but they're supposed to be flat-reference speakers...
