sense has plenty of official releases - why not purchase those instead?
There are the two EP's on the australian Aural Industries label, the
melencholica ep, his debut album on neo ouija, different tracks avaidable on
Merck compilation, and his split 7inch with phonex. The ice scatter slumber
"album" is not just mp3s collated under a fake album name, the individual
tracks have been renamed as well. It's unfortunate that somebody decided to
do this, as Sense has always been very free with distributing mp3s of both
released and unreleased tracks. The person that "created" the ice scatter
slumber ep is taking away one of the only controls an artist has over the
material they release on mp3 - the right to name their own tracks, and to
collate and sequence these individual tracks into a meaningful whole that
could be called an album. Adam (sense) is quite right in thinking that "ice
scatter slumber" is both a disrespectful way of distributing his music, and
a misrepresentation of the tracks in question. For someone who invests so
much of his time, thought, and emotion in his music, and who has been so
willing to let people have his music essentially for free, the further
distribution of this fake mp3 album can only be interpreted as a lack of
respect for him personally and for the music.
I'm not criticising those who have the ice scatter slumber EP. For some im
sure its their first taste of an amazing musician, and incorrectly named or
not the music is still the same. I just ask people to think about what it
means to be appreciating amazing music in a format that has essentially been
hijacked by an anonymous person. If you like Sense's music, then support him
by actually purchasing an official release. Or download some of his official
mp3 releases on www.miasmah.com or www.mono211.com
its about RESPECT. Musicians owe listeners nothing. Broadening your mp3
collection is all well and good, as long as your honest with yourself about
what your doing. In this small genre we (dis)like to call "IDM", artists are
usually individuals not to disimmilar from you or I. Generally they arent
making all that much money from music. They struggle to make, and then
release their music, without profit in mind. Most are happy just to know
people are listening to and getting something from their work. Some are even
happy to release mp3s, knowing full well that once out there, the songs and
their distribution will be out of their control.
just bear that in mind next time you are downloading entire albums from
soulseek or whatever...if you like an artist, then its not a big step to
actually purchase one of their releases
