That statement sounded a bit harsh. It's not that I don't like Hong Kong (or Gravity for that matter) It's just that I think Interstate was such a strong album it pretty much changed the way I thought about lushness and spaciousness (all the things that person posted in the original message I responded to) in techno flavored music. Interstate sounded like a walk through a rainforest. To me, Hong Kong sounds much less distinct and even in the context of 'it's an early work' I still don't find it very interesting. Circa, Gobi/Interstate + the few 12" 's released around that timeframe.. wow!
