generally speaking i prefer to purchase CDs. often times i'll try to download mp3s and see just how much i actually like something, and if i really enjoy it i'll track down the CD or wax. As for vinyl, I prefer CDs only because I can transport them elsewhere for listening (i.e., work and home, etc), and they are easier to take care of. However, if something has extra nice artwork in the LP edition I'll get the vinyl. I generally only pick up vinyl if it's unavailable on CD, usually 12" singles these days. If the shop up the road only has the vinyl sometimes I'll just do that since it's convenient, despite my CD preference. I personally think CDs are the most easily transferred to CDR or MP3, because it's all handled within my computer directly without having to connect the turntable, grab tracks one by one, convert, etc.... a big pain in my opinion. in fact sometimes it's easier if i've purchased vinyl to just do a quick search for mp3s and hopefully get them digitally pretty fast without going to the lengths of encoding them myself, which can take an entire afternoon.
