idm artists, as I'm open to suggestions. someone's already mentioned the fabulous Erik Satie, and I can only add that the Naxos label has a fantastic series of Satie disks for about $6 each, unfortunately I can't recall the name of the pianist, but she's great and picks great pieces to play. Speaking of great, ridiculously cheap stuff from Naxos, they've released John Cage's "Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano (1946-48)". Certainly fits the bill of "piano, slightly affected," in this case by junk stuck in the piano strings. Unlike his later, random process stuff, this is his composed stuff. eccentric, melodic, understated, most of it clearly influenced by gamelan music. highly recommended. Bartok's "Mikrokosmos" is a treasure trove of great 30 second to two minute gems. Written for piano students, it goes from baby simple to virtuosically complex. usually some little hungarian folk melody chiseled into a gracefully contorted bit of invention with a lot of soul. Lots of different recordings, not sure who to recommend; hell, buy the sheet music and play some! cheers k --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
