I personally don't think Boards of Canada make the best music on the
planet, and I agree that most of their music is very pleasant. The reason
I like Boards of Canada so much, though, is because their EP's and the LP
are consistently pleasant. I like buying a cd or record, putting it on,
and leaving it. I don't like to skip over songs I don't like, which means
that 1 or 2 bad songs can leave a sour taste in my mouth. Boards of Canada
haven't done that [yet], to my ears. A lot of the recent IDM has some
killer tracks that are really amazing, but the albums have 4 or 5 tracks
that are just boring, plodding, sub-standard IDM, which has saved me a lot
of money recently :D
boring, plodding songs in IDM is even worse than boring, plodding songs in
other genres, since IDM songs are typically SO LONG.
So, when I listened to Music has... the first time, I thought "hey, this is
alright, not a total waste of money." I took it off and it sat for a
while. Two weeks went by, and I popped it back in again, remembering "hey,
this was pretty good, I'll give it another listen." It was still
consistently good throughout. Not breathtaking, not "wear out your
cd-player" amazing, but solid. And I could listen to the whole thing and
enjoy myself! Sure, it's a pretty standard formula, and they're not
breaking new ground, but they do what they're trying to do really well, in
my opinion. So they've earned a lot of respect in my book.
I'm sure I have other opinions on other things, too, but I'll leave those
for other posts. :D
