======================================================== MUTEK / Music, Sound and New Technologies ======================================================== MUTEK_NEWS +++Dec_2001+++ * MUTEK 2002 ** MUTEK_MICRO *** 2001 ARCHIVES **** COMPILATION OF CANADIAN ELECTRONIC MUSIC ***** AND... After a few months of silence, we're back. Far from remaining inactive, we have in fact been preparing the trajectory that will lead us to the third edition of MUTEK. * MUTEK 2002 The next edition of MUTEK will take place from Wednesday, May 29 to Sunday, June 2. Program planning is already underway and will continue until the end of February. Our mission is to be on the cutting edge of innovation in the field of electronic music and sound creation, and to provide an environment for discovery and exchange between artists and the public. Preserving the formula of the last two editions, MUTEK 2002 will offer a series of concerts and connected activities -- we hope to add new components, such as conferences and screenings, to the program. If you have an idea or project that is related to MUTEK's mission, please don't hesitate to contact us. All demos or proposals should be submitted to us before February 15, 2002 (please use the address that appears at the bottom of this newsletter). Program and venues of MUTEK 2002 will be unveiled officially in April. ** MUTEK_MICRO In 2002, MUTEK will continue to organize special evenings in the spirit of pursuing its mission year round. The next event (MICRO 3) will take place on February 15th (location to be confirmed shortly). Organized in association with Force Inc, it will celebrate the release of the "Montreal Smoked Meat" compilation, featuring twelve Montreal artists: Akufen, Steve Beaupré, Orazio Fantini, Crackhaus, Jetone, Mitchell Akiyama, Jeff Milligan, Suna, Deadbeat, Mike Shannon, Mateo Murphy and Eloi Brunelle. In addition to showcasing live PAs by many of these artists, the MICRO 3 evening will host the North American debut of the German duo M.R.I. (Force Tracks - Frankfurt, Germany). The other good news is that MUTEK will start getting involved more actively outside of Montreal. A first venture will take place in Berlin on February 9th, as part of an event called TRANSMEDIALE (www.transmediale.com), and will feature live PAs by Akufen, Jetone, Deadbeat and Pole. There are also plans for a Toronto evening in April. *** 2001 ARCHIVES The sound and photographic archives of MUTEK 2001 are FINALLY (!) updated on our website (www.mutek.ca); the contents of the last two editions of MUTEK are almost all available online. **** COMPILATION OF CANADIAN ELECTRONIC MUSIC In 2002, MUTEK will develop a collection of three online MP3 compilations of Canadian electronic music, with 10 to 15 pieces per edition. We are hereby launching a call for submissions for the first compilation, which will be released in April 2002. All independent Canadian musicians are invited to submit work (a maximum of two tracks per person, please!) before March 1st. Submissions should be sent by regular mail; otherwise, in February we will create a space on our server that will allow you to upload sound files. The goal of this initiative is to create a space for new electronic music and innovative aural composition, sheltered from narrow-minded academic traditions and commercial imperatives. Ideally, submitted works will avoid the commonplace, reject the banal, and/or conquer new aesthetic spaces (quite a statement!). In short, the collection aims to illustrate Canadian creativity in all its diversity. To encourage communication and networking between artists, works that are retained will be accompanied by documentation on our website, such as details about the artist and his/her method, as well as contact information. This project is possible thanks to the support of the Canada Arts Council. ***** AND... This is the news for now! We promise to communicate more often in the upcoming months. In the meantime, we wish you the best for the holiday season. These last three months have been very troubling due to the sharp realization of the planet's frailty. We can only wish ourselves a new year that will be constructive and inspiring, on all accounts...
