Yeah, there's enough IDM out there to warrant a 24-hour station, absolutely. But I think you'd have to expand your definition of "IDM" to do it, to keep the content fresh and more diverse than some folks would have it. Since you opened the door by actively not promoting a company tied to your employer, there's room for me to sneak in and actively promote my own gig. I program an all-IDM station, cleverly dubbed "IDM", that resides on, of all places, VH1.com, and judging by the number of listeners its attracting, I'd say that lots of people out there agree with this idea. Right now, as Mr. EggyToast just suggested, we have a shuffling/compiling thing going on, where we've encoded a couple of hundred IDM-ish albums and we weight the songs individually, so some come up often, others less often. The music is pulled from the same database that feeds the other 100+ stations that reside on either VH1.com or MTV.com (I know, I know...) so these couple of hundred IDM-ish albums are only a small part of much, much larger palette from which to choose. I don't think there's any shortage of good IDM music out there, but there's definitely a shortage of people who are willing to broaden their horizons and definitions and scope. The station I program has a looser definition of "IDM" than some folks find comfortable I suppose, but that's because Intelligent Dance Music can really include all sorts of stuff when you take into account influences, variations, or an offbeat recommendation from your local record store clerk (who is hopefully surrounded by something other than dance music.) If you've made it this far and are interested in listening to this station, it sits here: http://www.vh1.com/sounds.visions/vh1atwork/ Scroll past the mega-platinum artist stations at the top... oh, and you need a (free) username and password account to listen... And if you're interested in getting your music on this station, just write me offlist and I'll give you the details. No palm-greasing, no MTV/VH1 bullshit to wade through, just send me your record. /Larry -----Original Message----- From: Lysaa Bi [mailto:lysaabi@earthlink.net] Sent: Wednesday, December 05, 2001 4:29 PM To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: [idm] IDM Radio? I'm just wondering, is there enough IDM out there to format a 24hour FM radio station? I work for the company that built the satellite for xmradio, so I hear about it alot. I'm thinking it would be nice if one of the 100 FM stations available by subscription over the whole US have a more interesting format than say, the various music formats on DirectTV. Maybe a grassroots movement(like hundreds of subscribers demanding IDM) might convince the programming execs to make an IDM channel... here's the link for the current dance channels http://www.xmradio.com/programming/programming_category.jsp?category=Dan ce I'm NOT trying to sell xmradio, just looking for opinions. Thoughts, anyone? Is there enough decent idm out there? Would people like to see an idm station available across the US, that everyone could listen to simultaneously? What are the social ramifications?
