this is interesting.. because phoenecia's newest album is one of the first
things by them i've heard that's really interested me. i actually enjoy the
artwork... as i do with most schematic releases. i do rather like that
schematic has branched out to include other illustrators/designers than
strictly the designers republic. from the sound of your post, you don't like
nice artwork? or digipacks? or both? i'd certainly rather have something
nicely designed (cliche or no), be it a digipack or a jewel case, or a
sleeve, than another run of the mill jewel case with hacked out artwork that
looks like it took 2 min in microsoft publisher...
what i like about brownout is that it evolves over the course of the
album... and while some of it is completely abstract DSP-type stuff, there's
plenty of more accessible material on it as well, a fairly healthy balance
in my opinion.
sorry you didn't like the album.... although it seems as though you are
still stuck on the music of 1993. i really like the old warp stuff, but i
also really like where it's gone, shot off in all sorts of weird directions.
as for the comparison of autechre and phoenecia... i don't really have any
vested interest in whether they "hang out" or not, nor do i find any
distinct similarities, other than that both have migrated progressively
further away from what could be considered "typical IDM".... not a bad thing
in my book.
