Having gotten the promos and mp3s, here's my snap judgements:
DRUKQS GOOD.
It should be blindingly obvious by now that Aphex Twin is no longer
the vanguard of Electronic Music. There are other people out there who
are defining the bleeding edge. But to my ears, Drukqs really is a sort
of 'best of breed' Aphex Twin endeavor. The bloody-minded banger "cock-ver10"
stutters and squawks disarmingly -- and then takes a left turn into
a Varese-esque interlude before going mad again.
The piano interludes are quite lovely as well. They remind me a lot
of the little instrumental pieces that show up on Captain Beefheart records --
reminders that beyond the sound design and clatter beats that there's
a lyrical side that's purely musical ...
If it doesn't do anything for you, it isn't like you don't have an
embarrassment of other choices.
Idle trainspotting -- 'assois' sounds like bjork talking, and then the
following track 'hy a scullyas lyf a dhagrow' sounds a lot like bjork's
music box track on Vespertine ....
