I'm always perversely fascinated by this 'non-art' stuff...(eg everybody sleeps, and watching someone else sleep is not very interesting...I first came across the idea in a Warhol film). Someone once made a very boring video of driving round and round the ring road which surrounds London, and it sold like hot cakes. Myself I have a strange obsession with washing machines. They entrance me. I mention this only because every now and again I design a weirdo synth patch or set up some odd effects combo with my few pieces of gear, and then happily spend an hour or more listening to the resulting noises while adjusting the parameters. I rarely bother to record any of this because a) I don't have much disk space, but mainly b) I feel like 'it's not really music' if I can't (or don't want to) sync it up with a beat or suchlike. I like the variety of sounds that can be pulled out of a setup like this, but I always assumed that that was because I am basically a synth nerd :-) However sometimes I'll make an mp3 or the like for a friend to show off something we've been talking about (eg weird things to do with delays) and people seem to quite like these recordings of me just tweaking about rather than trying to actively write a track. It's not my idea of IDM, since it is often neither danceable nor deliberately musical, I don't know what to call it...electronic improvisation or something? Does anyone else like listening to this sort of stuff? Or am I just weird? Anig Browl _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
