I think to characterise the whole of IDM as becoming more popular is stupid (almost as stupid as saying that all rap music is boring and crap), I don't think that albums like Confield will ever be mainstream they are just too demanding, but almost everyone likes "easy" IDM, such as BOC, its simply not unlikeable, people who denounce electronic music as twittery shite hear it and are almost at once converted to its cause. However the number of people who say "This sounds like computer game music, dont't you find it boring?" is still high enough to be annoying. Most people just can't be bothered to listen unless the music has lyrics, hence the popularity of artists like Bjork who fuse a more interesting electronic sound with catchy friendly lyrics. Ditto Moloko, Chemical Bros, Prodigy (?) etc. I think that the logical progression for a proportion of the people who like these rock/electonic fusion bands will move on to Class A electronica, whilst the rest will bugger off and dance to fads like trance and company. Compared to when I started listening about 4 years ago it is now super-popular. All the major artists' singles charge up the UK dance/indie charts to No.1. and nearly everyone will have heard of aphex "he's that guy with the freaky videos ain't he?" twin, with squarepusher rapidly bringing up the rear with his "garage hit" my red hot car. Certainly every music journo worth his salt will soon have been listening for the last 20 years and have a copy of analogue bubblebath 2 in his collection dating from the days when he and Mr James were riding his tank through bank vaults near his prison, using copies of mask 100 for target practice etc etc etc... georgewilliamson
