I'll answer the inevitable comment. Yes, one could dig for "underground hip hop" that does not play up on those sterotypes. When 90+% of the hip hop you hear sucks, it's doesn't exactly make you want to go out look for something not too distant in style. In the 80s when I was hearing all the bad hair metal that dominated MTV, I didn't say, hey I want to find the good metal that's out there.
