I think the major flaw here is the assumption that "newness" is a
unquestionable virtue. Originality isn't everything and often isn't
anything.
I don't understand modern (last 100 years) music's obsession with always
changing. Some of the most interesting work has come from slight
variations on a standard. Orientalism isn't really all it's cracked up
to be.
