It means he wasn't interested in what he was hearing. I personally didn't
notice too many people acting overly intelligent- certainly not enough to
scare David Byrne away. He's one of the original rock n' roll philosphers.
Also, maybe he didn't leave the building, he just wanted to get away from
you... I'm just KIDDING!
I definitely think music appreciation has to do with "being in the moment".
I don't think whether or not Autechre makes sense to you is about
intelligence. Like I said before- some people hear it, some people don't-
and even whether or not you can hear them in an ordered way, can vary from
show to show. The question then might be, does intelligence very from moment
to moment? We all definitely have moments of lucidity, versus moments of
being confused and overwhelmed. Maybe there can be an argument constructed
linking music appreciation to intelligence, but that would seem to be a very
elitist and subjective argument.
I personally like to call IDM "InsteaD of Music" ;)
